#24HRSOFPEACE: "Uniting The Human Family" Friday, August 28 - Saturday, August 29, 2015 24 Full Hours (6PM to 6PM) Clinton Avenue & Bergen Streets, Newark, NJ
With performances from Rakim, Smif N Wessun, DuItAll, Das EFX, The Juice Crew Reunion, and an exclusive TIDAL Lil Wayne Concert *AGENDA below As the number of violent deaths and incidents involving unarmed citizens escalates, there is a universal cry for unity in communities across the nation. Newark's annual #24HrsOfPeace event was formed as an early onset outcry, a collective led by the local Hip-Hop community, concerned elected officials, and active everyday people and organizations who want to improve the plight of thousands of city residents. Following the recent "Occupy Newark" event, #24HrsOfPeace is the next in a set of public demonstrations to signify Mayor Baraka's and the City's commitment to recognizing and combating violence as a public health issue. About the five-year-old organization founded by Newark native, activist, and rapper Hakim Green, Mayor Baraka said, "24 Hours Of Peace is an outstanding community organization, working tirelessly to unite and enable our youth so that they can achieve personal success and prosperity." He added, "Thanks to you, an entire generation of citizens has been exposed to the safe and productive cultural experience that is Hip-Hop, exemplified by your motto: Peace, Love, Unity, and Safely Having Fun. These are all attributes that our city is happy to share, more so now than ever." With character development and conflict resolution at the root of the arts and health-based effort, Mayor Baraka and organizers believe that instilling values and the influence of Hip-Hop culture can be used to cultivate change. In 2015, leaders include the City of Newark, the Office of Mayor Ras J. Baraka, 24 Hours of Peace, Inc., and HSP Ent, with music and health-based activities led by partners such as GrassROOTS Community Foundation (co-chaired by Tarik "Black Thought" Trotter of The Roots), 211 Community Impact, Believe In Newark, and Giant Thinking/The Bartenderz. Dr. Janice Johnson Dias, who serves as a City Commissioner and president of event partner GrassROOTS, said her organization has long been committed to supporting community members in Newark: "We are working closely with stakeholders at all levels to help foster and support a peaceful and thriving city. For us this is a core imperative because we know that violence is a public health issue. "Violence makes its way under people's skin and contributes to disease like hypertension, depression and anxiety. Regular physical activity including non-traditional methods like yoga, allowing adequate time to rest, and maintaining a healthy diet can all benefit our well being, but it is difficult to do that in the presence of violence," Johnson Dias noted. The symbolic nature of one day free of violence in this particular location has not been overlooked by 24 HRS Of Peace's Hakim Green, who often shares that the Clinton Avenue and Bergen Street site marks the spot of a violent gang war in August 2014 where five people were killed. Green said it's also important to note that there was a cease-fire during the 2014 event. "Peace in this very spot represents the potential of our united presence in the community. This location is also just blocks from the childhood home of Mayor Baraka, who will always stand tall as a proud native of the South Ward," added Green."
