It’s a big responsibility to play a character who really existed. It’s an even larger responsibility to play that character while he is still alive. That is Michael K. Williams’ task as he plays “Freeway” Ricky Ross.  This Friday, October 10, the film-adaptation of “Kill the Messenger” hits theaters. The film, starring Jeremy Renner, is the true story of Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Gary Webb.

Webb stumbles onto a story which leads to the shady origins of the men who started the crack epidemic on the nation’s streets. Williams, who plays the legendary drug kingpin, said the story was too good to be true when he got the script. “I didn’t even know there was a real Rick Ross until he came home from prison and there was a discrepancy on if he can use his name,” Williams said to STASHED in this exclusive interview. “So I read the script and I felt like this was too good to be true, this can’t be fake.”

Once Williams discovered that Ross was a real person, his meeting and subsequent friendship he developed with him is something he still cherishes as one of the best experiences of working on the film. “He’s one of the nicest people you’d ever want to meet,” Williams stated. “Humble, gracious, kind. Just my kind of guy.”
